So my birthday is on Monday, January 22nd.
Days back, someone asked me what’s on my birthday list. I said I didn’t have a
list and got a reaction that said “You’re an alien.”
A birthday list is cool. It helps people who don’t
know what to get you know what to get you. It kind of makes the job easier. You
can do ojukokoro(greed) and add really expensive or hard to get gifts if you are wealthy and expect people to
follow what’s on your list alone and share the list around to make sure people
get you gifts you want.
To me, it kind of takes away the spontaneity and
surprise in getting gifts. The essence of receiving gifts is like “Hey, I thought about you and this is from me to you.” It’s coming from the heart and all that mushy stuff. I can understand if you make a birthday wish that friends don’t buy you anything but donate to a cause or some charity.

Especially here in Nigeria that people throw wedding
parties and birthday parties and out of a thousand people that attend, only ten
come with gifts. Then they(the ones that didn’t bring gifts) still complain
that food isn’t enough or nice, drinks aren’t cold plus they complain about the
kind of souvenirs you shared or lack of it. (That thing always shocks me. Lol)
A birthday list is nice in the sense of knowing what
you want. Like, if you’re saying a prayer, you don’t just say, “God bless me
but God bless me with a new car.” Or something like that. But are humans God?
God knows your intentions. A birthday list seems kind of forced. You forcing
people to get you this and be cool with it because it’s your birthday then
you’ll get pissed if it’s something outside the list.
People, have different pockets. Your saying get me
this and that kinda makes it seem “If you’re my friend and wanna stay in my
good books, measure up and get me something on this list else…”
As usual these are my thoughts. I think you should
relax, don’t turn it into a venture and let friends and family surprise you
with how they feel about you and what their pockets can reach happily. By all
means, do a birthday list if you want.
A lot of thought process goes into buying a gift for
someone you like. Receiving the end result of that thought process is always
fun and interesting. No matter how
little the gift, it should be appreciated.
What’s my birthday wish? I should be dead by now,
true story. Please, do take some seconds and say a prayer in your heart and ask
God for whatever you want for me. Wait, read below.
Gifts are very welcome too. I love surprises and free
things I didn’t expect, think of or buy myself. Who no like osho free(free
things)?
The birthday list is modern and new school. I like
the old school better.
Thank you for reading my thoughts. What are yours?
Nice piece. I prefer the old school too.
ReplyDeleteWe do share a lot of things. As much as I hate surprises, I love gifts and what is the beauty of a gift if you already know what is in it. I love the old order joor. Happy birthday sweetheart.
